K 22 Masterpiece Serial Numbers

  1. Smith And Wesson K-22 Masterpiece Serial Numbers
  • Nov 29, 2008  This was the Third series K-22 and S&W released it after the war Effort in The Summer of 1946 with a new series of serial numbers starting with the K-Prefix in front of the actual serial number. They only produced about 614 Models in this series in 1946 then started producing the 1947 Models.
  • S&W K-22 Masterpiece 'Pre-Model 17' This is a discussion on S&W K-22 Masterpiece 'Pre-Model 17' within the Projects forums, part of the Firearm Forum category; I decided to start a project thread since this is really a project gun. In case you missed it the first time around I found.

In the case of the K-22, this occurred each time the side plate or frame shed another screw, in 1957 when the model names gave way to the number system and in the late 20 th Century when the classic ribbed barrels disappeared in favor of the heavy under-lugs. Throughout history, it has been just possible to acquire a substandard K-22 and there.

Serial

Every so often there's a thread that comes along where someone is looking for suggestions for a 22LR DA revolver. There are always lots of posts about the SP101 4.2' in 22LR and I know that gun has its fans. I sometimes pipe up and suggest a S&W Model 17 or 18 would be a good choice but maybe that's a bit out of place on a Ruger forum.

Masterpiece

I love my Rugers and I have more Rugers than any other brand. I am fiercely loyal to Ruger and think that generally Rugers are great products backed by the best customer service in the industry. But they don't have a great 22LR DA/SA revolver. That would be either a Colt or S&W. The Colts have reached prices where you need a second mortgage to buy one but there are still great opportunities in the S&W Models 17 and 18.Case in point. I walked into a local pawn shop recently that I know sometimes has a few interesting guns and I also know the guys working the counter are not the most savvy when it comes to old revolvers. They're not stupid and they're real nice and friendly (more so than a lot of LGS) but they miss things sometimes. In the case I spot a S&W revolver.I can tell it's a 22LR by the muzzle. And I can see it's a 4 inch barrel.and it looks pretty clean.

So first I ask to see a an old Super Blackhawk with a horrible re-barrel job that includes a compensator and a scope mount with a red dot. Such a shame - it was a three-screw old model. Then I ask to look at the Smith. K-22 Combat Masterpiece Model 18-3, pinned barrel, target hammer, target trigger and target stocks.

Serial

I asked them to remove the stocks.no issues, clean and shiny bore, no major rust (maybe a tiny freckle here or there), no pitting, a faint turn line and few handling marks. 'How old is it?' 'I dunno.there's a date on the grips that says 1984.' I know enough about old Smiths to know they stopped pinning the barrels in 1982 and besides this serial number starts with 1K so it has to be a lot older than 1984.We haggled a bit and I got 'em down a hundred bucks. Bottom line - I bought it for $500. Last time I looked on GunBroker the street price on a new SP101 4.2' in 22LR was closer to $600.

Which gets back to my original thought - a S&W Model 18 (or 17) is a phenominal DA 22LR revolver with a wonderful trigger and legendary accuracy and they can be found without really looking all that hard and at prices that are comparable to a new SP101. I'm not bashing the SP101 - I have a couple of them myself and I'm a huge Ruger fan. But these old Model 17s and 18s are pretty darn special. Even S&W doesn't 'make 'em like they used too' and the older guns are cherished treasures by most folks who have them.So here it is - my new-to-me K-22 Combat Masterpiece Model 18-3. Serials to 1971. The stocks are not original to the gun and have a stamped date of 1984 inside one panel. I suppose someone swapped them out in the 1980s.

No matter.Target hammer -.500' wide.Target trigger -.400' wideHey Q1 - this shot's for you buddy! Nice pick up.I wanted a.22 revolver just because I didn't have one. I did some reading and it seemed popular concensus was S&W K22.

Model 17 or whatever they are called. I'm not a revolver guy so will defer to greater minds on the proper naming.Anyway, I saw three such models in the LGS and none seemed priced that high. I came home, hit GB, and went back a day later to pick up what I think is a 1961 Mod-17 for four hundred bucks. I thought it was a deal and from the prices I was seeing on GB I think I was right.Sometimes you luck into a good deal. Yours is beautiful. You bought a terrific 22LR DA revolver at a great price.

S&W nomenclature is tricky - lots of handles tossed around. No matter - you got a good one! Sweet revolver. Those older Smiths are works of art! Here is my 34-1 22LR.

2', square butt, target trigger and hammer. I have the original blue box and paperwork. It is the nicest 22 revolver I've ever shot. It's now the wife's gun-she is quite proficient with it!Nice!! Box and papers too! Most of my old Smiths are just nice shooter grade guns and have very few boxes, papers, and tools.

Same could be said for my old Rugers for that matter. That's OK - I don't consider myself to be a collector but I do collect shooters (if that makes any sense.). Box and papers too! I just REALLY appreciate the good stuff!I was fortunate to receive this as a gift from a former student of mine about 20 years ago. It has been a blessing over the years. I still think of my friend EVERY time I go in the safe.
